You've seen the idyllic setting in ads. The swimming pool sits atop a mount with green overland views. A wrought iron fence describes the boundary of the property, while an almost invisible fence surrounds the deck of the pool.

The inner fence, intended to keep young children safe is a Guardian product that Bermuda company, Vinyltech stocks.

The 'Vanishing Fence,' according to Vinyltech managing partner, Ron Hook, is Guardian's newest removable fencing.

New colour

"The new colour added by Guardian... almost looks transparent, which is what most customers want," Mr. Hook said.

And the fact that you can protect your children by day, take down and roll up the removable mesh for an adult evening party and then replace it afterwards makes this lightweight import a practical addition to your property.

If you don't own a pool, but wish to limit your under-5s to a particular area, the 'Vanishing Fence' works just as well.

According to its website at www.guardianpoolfence.com, a Guardian fence is virtually impossible to climb. Its specially designed gate has no crossbar at the top. The lack of rigidity here prevents toddlers from gaining a handhold, and toeholds are not possible because of the small size of the mesh.

The website makes the point, however, that infants and toddlers should always have adult supervision. Because water and forbidden things attract them, two preschoolers working together might decide to push garden furniture against the fence and manage to get over it that way. The presence of adults would deter that behaviour and avert a possible drowning.

Guardian's website features removable fencing in beige, black, green and brown and in four, four-and-a-half and five-foot heights. It does not as yet show the 'Vanishing Fence' product.

But Vinyltech, according to Mr. Hook, can order all colours and heights, while the in-stock transparent fencing can be had immediately at $24 a running foot.

Bermuda's climate

"We have been testing our current installations in Bermuda's climate [for] wind, etc. It works well... It is a new product for us, but I think it will be very popular," he said.

Vinyltech is located at 137 Front Street and open Monday through Friday from 8am till 5pm.
