Ian Kawaley

Chief Justice Ian Kawaley presented a paper on Bermuda Trust Law at the International Trust and Tax Summit in Miami on Tuesday, November 19, 2013.

Justice Kawaley explained the general approach of Bermuda’s courts to applications by trustees in relation to the internal administration of trusts. His paper noted that: “Since as early as 1936, Bermudian banks have been empowered by statute to act as trustees and provide trust administration services to, primarily, wealthy settlors domiciled abroad in onshore ‘metropolitan’ jurisdictions”. And although “Bermuda trust law is predominantly influenced by English law principles, the application of those principles in practice will inevitably reflect the distinctive character of Bermuda’s legal soil”.

Marsh donation

Marsh and Guy Carpenter & Company LLC have given $9,750 to Friends of Hospice, the supporting charity for Agape House. The donation is being used to revamp the organisation’s community awareness programme including a new interactive website, promotional videos and other marketing materials.

“As Bermuda’s first and only in-patient hospice, Agape House has touched many lives in Bermuda through the work they do,” said David Ezekiel, Bermuda chairman of Marsh & McLennan Companies and Chairman of Marsh’s Bermuda Charity Committee.

“We are delighted to support Friends of Hospice with this donation to help build awareness of the important role the charity plays within the Bermuda community.”
