FRIDAY, JAN. 14: Freedom of expression issues raised by defence lawyer Charles Richardson’s defamation case look set to be scrutinized by the Supreme Court.

Mr. Richardson was charged last week with unlawfully publishing defamatory matter against police officer Robert Cardwell on May 11, 2010.

It follows comments allegedly posted by Mr. Richardson on a Facebook page.

Mr. Richardson’s lawyer Craig Attridge said the charge of defamation went against a person’s constitutional right to freedom of expression and asked for the criminal case to be delayed until that matter was resolved by the Supreme Court.

Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner agreed, adjourning the defamation case until March 31.
