FRIDAY, NOV. 16: When the armour of God is mentioned in Ephesians there are three pieces of equipment you are to ‘stand with’, which means you are on the defensive and need to protect yourself.

But then Paul lists three pieces of equipment you are to ‘take up’, which means you are on the offensive.

One of those offensive weapons is the sword of the spirit, which is the word of God (Ephesians 6:17b).

After all if you are going use a sword… you are about to put something to death.

However, Paul already mentioned the belt of truth as the first defensive weapon that should be buckled around our waist — which is also the word of God.

So why is the sword of the spirit mentioned as the word of God again as the last offensive weapon?  Why two?

It is important to note that the belt of truth is the written word of God that we study and hide in our hearts. We need to be students of the Bible.

However, the sword of the spirit is a more specific word that God gives by His spirit which can also be the written word of God, but for a specific situation.

In other words, the sword of the spirit is the word that God gives you in the season of your battle with the enemy to put to death what the enemy is trying to keep alive in your life.

Let me explain further.

When Jesus was tempted by the devil and he was asked to turn the stones into bread; he quotes Deuteronomy 8:3 when he said that it is written, “Man does not live by bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God”.

That was the sword. In other words the Holy Spirit can give you the written word of God for the specific trial or temptation that you are facing to put the world, the flesh, and the devil to death in your life.

Notice, Jesus does not quote Psalm 23 or Genesis 1:1, rather the Holy Spirit gave him the exact word he needed for the specific dilemma he was faced with — and I want you to take full assurance in the fact that the Holy Spirit can do the same for you.

To just quote the scripture is not enough in a battle — you need the ‘hand-picked’ scripture from the Holy Spirit to apply to your current situation.

So keep on the belt of truth – by remaining in His Word, but also rely on the Lord to give you the sword of the spirit for the exact battle you will face this week.

If you are getting beat up by the enemy lately maybe you need to put on the belt to have more of an arsenal for the Holy Spirit to form a sword.

This sword is required to end some things in your life.

Is it a sinful habit, worry, fear, discouragement, complacency or depression you’re facing?

It’s time to put it to death!
