It’s not just children who can go trick or treating — adults can too.

Why not create your own Hallowe’en trick or treat get-together with a blind tasting from the vine?

Discovery Wines has two wines to get you in the mood for the Hallowe’en festivities — the Phantom from Bogle Vineyards and the Troublemaker by Austin Hope Family Wines. Both red wines hail from California’s Central Coast.

The 2009 Phantom ($26.50) is a blend of old vine Zinfandel, Petite Sirah and Mourvedre.

Christian Robertson, director of sales and marketing, said: “We’ve just brought it in and it’s the spookiest wine we’ve got.”

He describes it as a “heady apparition of fierce berry and sensual spice”.

“Phantoms and goblins and ghouls are a big part of Hallowe’en and this wine will fit right into your Hallowe’en party theme… Don’t be afraid to bring a bottle of Phantom home for the upcoming holiday.”

The Troublemaker ($29.90) is a blend of Syrah, Grenache, Mourvedre and Petite Sirah.

“This is definitely the wine which sums up ‘trick or treat’,” said Mr Robertson.

It has “bright aromas of black cherry and licorice” with “amazing depth and intensity”.

“By using a multi-vintage approach (tricky), Austin allows the wine to show uncanny complexity in its youth, yet rich and fruit-forward characteristics (treat),” said Mr Robertson.

Discovery Wines is holding a Hallowe’en-themed Wine Flights at the Fairmont Hamilton Princess on October 31. Sample five wines from 5:30-7pm at the Heritage Court, for just $10. That’s definitely a treat. n
