The ACE Foundation — Bermuda offers two education awards for Bermudians interested in entering the insurance industry.

The Robert Clements/ACE Scholarship has provided financial support to more than 20 Bermudian university students since its establishment in 1996, enabling them to complete insurance-related degrees and pursue careers in the international insurance industry.

Aptitude

The fully-funded scholarship is awarded to qualified students studying full-time towards an undergraduate or graduate degree in insurance, risk management, actuarial science or other disciplines related to the industry, eg. corporate law, finance or economics.

The award includes tuition and fees, room and board, text books, round-trip airfares from Bermuda, and employment opportunities.

This scholarship is awarded annually and the recipient must maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.0 on a 4 point scale or equivalent. The deadline for applications is 30 April each year.

Andrew Fleming, the 2011 Robert Clements/ACE Scholarship recipient, was selected out of 51 candidates for the award.

The 17-year-old graduated from CedarBridge Academy with a near perfect grade point average of 3.98, the highest GPA in the school’s history. Andrew commenced a Bachelor of Arts degree majoring in economics at Mount St Vincent University in September 2011, and once completed he plans to return to Bermuda to work as an underwriter.

Scholars are expected to seek employment at ACE during university breaks to gain relevant work experience in the company’s insurance or reinsurance operations.

They may apply for the Summer Internship Programme (SIP) and the ACE Student Employment Programme.

Scholars are also invited to take advantage of learning and development opportunities, as well as the chance to network with ACE employees and executives.

Recipients must be willing to return to Bermuda on completion of their studies to pursue a career in the insurance industry.

The ACE/Bermuda College Education Award is the result of a partnership with the college in 2008. This award aims to help
students make the connection between their studies and the workplace.

It offers Bermuda College graduates an opportunity to continue their undergraduate studies overseas, with an education award of $15,000 per year.

This covers tuition and fees for up to two years immediately following graduation.

Development

The Selection Committee will base its decision on the financial need, academic achievements and aptitude of applicants.

Students must maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.0 on a 4 point scale or equivalent to be considered for the second year of the award. The deadline for application is mid-April each year.

Teleza Pitcher received the 2011 ACE/Bermuda College Education Award.

She graduated from Bermuda College with an Associate of Science Degree in biology and is pursuing a Bachelor of Science Degree in Biology at Howard University. Her goal is to become a dentist.

Teleza has spent the past two summers as a dental assistant intern and took advantage of work-shadowing opportunities at school to ensure that it was the right career choice for her.

Award recipients are invited to seek employment at ACE during university breaks if relevant work experience is available. Students can apply for the Summer Internship Programme (SIP) and the ACE Student Employment Programme.

They are also invited to take advantage of learning and development opportunities at ACE.
