WEDNESDAY, MAR. 14: Zumba dancers have raised hundreds of dollars to help children travel to the UK to play football.

Members of the Zumba Fusion group organized a fitness party to collect funds for the Pembroke Hamilton Club (PHC) Youth Soccer Team.

More than 150 adults and children attended the two-hour event at Whitney Institute at the end of January.

The group managed to raise a total of $500 for the youth team, which will go directly towards their trip to Reading in the UK in August.

The tour will see the sporty youngsters train with and play against English soccer teams and represent Bermuda.

Kim Powell, who helped to organize the Zumba party, told the Sun: “It was a fantastic event. Everyone had a lot of fun.

“We were very pleased to raise the money for such a great cause.

“One of our members told us about PHC’s campaign to raise funds for their trip because her son is part of a PHC team.

“It should be an incredible experience for these children to go to the UK and represent Bermuda so we were just pleased to be able to help them with extra funds.”

Milique Fubler, one of the youth team’s coaches, told the Sun PHC was ‘very appreciative’ of the extra cash.

He said: “This is a great opportunity for the boys to travel to the UK and learn more about football.

“We have 27 boys and seven coaches going at the moment, and everyone is really looking forward to it.

“The Zumba fitness party was great fun and the boys who took part in it really enjoyed themselves.

“We are very grateful to everyone who helped raise the money.”

The Zumba group presented the proceeds of the fundraiser to children and coaches from PHC on Friday.

Zumba Fusion, which includes men and women, was formed around seven months ago and is proving a big success across the island.

The latest fitness party to raise funds for the PHC Youth Soccer Team was its second such event.

And members are already preparing for their next fitness party, which will be held at Berkeley Institute on Saturday evening between 6pm and 7pm.

The event has been organized to raise funds for Andrene Bean and her family who lost all their possessions when a blaze destroyed their Pembroke home earlier this month.

Ms Powell added: “There will be no admission charge for this fitness party, but we will be asking people to donate $10 to help the Bean family.

“It should be a lot of fun for a very worthwhile cause so we would encourage people to attend.”
