THURSDAY, JANUARY 17: Yesterday (Jan. 16), the Minister of Public Safety the Hon. Michael H. Dunkley JP; MP continued his round of familiarization visits this week with a visit to Corrections HQ and Westgate Correctional Facility.

Accompanied by Junior Minister Sen. Jeffrey Baron JP, Minister Dunkley met with Commissioner of Corrections, Lt. Col. Edward J. Lamb and his senior team followed by an extensive tour of Westgate.

Minister Dunkley remarked, “It is important for me to get up to speed on the workings of the Ministry’s departments and Corrections is a vital component of the public safety framework for Bermuda.

“Commissioner Lamb and his officers work extremely hard in often trying conditions and this Government is determined to make their jobs fulfilling. The people of Bermuda have expressed some views about their expectations of the Corrections system and I intend to work with all stakeholders to ensure that imprisonment is a deterrent to those who might offend and properly rehabilitates those who ultimately end up incarcerated.”

Later that same day the Minister met with the executive of the Prison Officers’ Association (POA) led by Mr. Dennis Brown.

The Minister further added, “Our meeting was positive and set a tone of open dialogue for the future. I am committed to working through any outstanding issues to resolution. On behalf of their members, the Executive emphasized their desire to work with the Government to ensure a safe work environment and we agreed to foster more effective communication.”
