Selena Minors, restaurant owner, said: “We at Selena’s Restaurant wanted to thank the community for patronizing our restaurant for the last 12 years.

“In acknowledging the customer is always first, we held a Selena’s ‘Thank You Feast and Block Party’ at the Wellington playground, where everything was free.

“It was our way of thanking people for their loyalty towards Selena’s Restaurant.”

She said: “The event turned out to be an overwhelming success. Not only did the community appreciate it, they asked whether we were going to have more events and whether they could help in any way.

“It resulted in Selena’s BBQ Throwdown competition.”

At the inaugural event last year there were nine competitiors and more than 250 spectators.

Community partners included the Corporation of St George’s, Mini Forwarder, East End Mini Yacht Club and Lisa Broadley.

This year, the rules are: There must be one cook and one assistant.

Both must wear something covering their head and an apron, have clean water and a hand towel.

Participants must have their own BBQ equipment and a presentation plate.

First prize is $250, second is $150 and third $100. Trophies will also be given out.

The event also features  a pie eating contest, mechanical bull and fun castles.
