Shadow Seniors Minister and Deputy Leader of the PLP Derrick Burgess is calling for an independent inquiry into the state of nursing homes on the island.

The announcement comes days after Mr Burgess highlighted the problems plaguing such operations in Bermuda. He says the government is brushing aside the problem.

“Before we can fight an issue, we must face it,” he said at a press conference this afternoon.

He added, “If there are spot checks on nursing homes with written reports and recommendations for improvements, why are there so many nursing homes that are breach of regulations?”

Burgess ticked off various alleged problems at nursing homes on the island: a festering foot infection that led to an amputation, bed sores, lack of nutritious meals and instances of verbal and physical abuse.

Mr Burgess said ideally, he would like to see Governor of Bermuda George Fergusson to set up an independent, impartial inquiry to examine the state of the homes in Bermuda.
