MONDAY, OCTOBER 17: The Bermuda Kennel Club will be holding their Annual Dog Shows on Saturday and Sunday, October 22 and 23, 2011 at Somersfield Academy, Middle Road, Devonshire.

Judging starts each day at 8:30am. Admission is Free.

International all breed championships

Conformation shows, also referred to as Breed Shows, are where each purebred dog is judged against the ideal breed type for their Breed, as described in its Breed Standard, like you see at the Westminster Dog Show, Crufts or the AKC/Eukanuba Championships on TV.

Obedience trials

Under the auspices of the Dog Training Club of Bermuda (DTC), four licensed obedience trials will also take place this weekend.

Obedience is a performance dog sport in which dog/handler teams are judged on their ability to perform a series of exercises, increasing in difficulty from Novice to Utility classes. Dogs must start in the Novice class and win three qualifying scores at each level before moving up to the next class.

Rally obedience trials

Under the auspices of IDEA - Rally Bermuda, rally obedience trials are also on the schedule.

Rally is a more relaxed and fun style of obedience, run under similar rules to Canadian Rally Obedience (CARO).

In this sport talking and barking are allowed!

Crufts qualification

This year we have about 70 dogs competing in the various events throughout the weekend, with thirteen (13) entered from the US and Canada.

The judges for all the disciplines are also coming from the US and Canada.

For the first time, the four International All Breed Championship Bermuda Dog Shows have been nominated as Qualifying Shows for Crufts 2012.

Crufts is one of the largest dog events in the world with about 28,000 dogs entered in various disciplines.

It is held in the UK under the rules of the prestigious Kennel Club, at the NEC Birmingham, in March.

The qualifying dogs, from each of the four Bermuda conformation shows, will be:

  • All Group Winners (firsts)
  • Best Puppy in Show
  • Best Veteran in Show
