Dr. Gregory Bernius is one of more than 25 local residents packing their bags for Haiti next week on an organized mission to help Haiti's earthquake victims.

But unlike most doctors, who are going armed with needles and plaster, his most healing tools are, simply, his hands.

Dr. Bernius is a registered chiropractor at Bernius Chiropractic Limited and a member of The Cornerstone Bible Fellowship, who organized the trip.

"Basically I will just do whatever needs to be done," Dr. Bernius said. "My background is also in first aid and I hope to treat bone and joint disorders as well as neck and back dislocations.

"I also have a lot of experience mountaineering overseas, so I'm used to spending nights outdoors and living off whatever you have in your backpack.

"But I am more nervous about the devastation I will see when I get there - the death and disease."

Dr. Bernius has lived in Bermuda since 1995 and he and his wife, Tina, have four children.

His wife had been out to Haiti several months ago with Cornerstone.

Dr. Bernius has a B.A. Degree from Mid-America Nazarene College in Olathe, Kansas, as well as a Doctor of Chiropractic Degree from Palmer College of Chiropractic in Davenport, Iowa.

He also has extensive post-graduate work in the management and treatment of neck and low back pain, headaches, sports injuries, radiology, biomechanics, exercise physiology and nutrition.
