An American tourist from New Jersey was fined $1,600 in Magistrates' Court yesterday for bringing drugs into the island.

Christopher Thomas Marino, 36, of Teaneck pleaded guilty to importing 1.63 grams of cannabis in four joints on New Year's Eve.

Senior Crown Counsel Paula Tyndale said that Mr. Marino arrived on a flight at the L. F. Wade International airport.

When he collected his baggage a drug detection dog alerted to him, prompting Customs interest.

Denying to the last that he had any drugs on him, Mr. Marino was found carrying the joints in blue wrapping paper in his boxer shorts.

The prosecutor told magistrate Khamisi Tokunbo that the drug had a street value of $75.
