Independent truckers were being asked to turn out today for a protest at what they say is illegal activity by tractor-trailer trucks.

Rumours circulating yesterday suggested that the truckers planned to block roads leading into Hamilton, causing traffic jams at rush hour. However, the majority of truckers objected to that move and instead protestors are expected to take positions at roadsides and on roundabouts.

Drivers of small trucks say that the tractor-trailors are restricted by law to transporting demolition rubble, such as concrete blocks and steel girders. However, drivers say that the monster trucks are routinely carrying smaller articles that should be left for the independent truckers.

Members of the New Bermuda Truckers Association say the activity is threatening their livelihoods and are calling on the Premier to pull the tractor-trailer operators into line.
