MONDAY, DECEMBER 5 (NEW YORK): Minister of Business Development and Tourism Wayne Furbert brought a taste of Bermuda – literally – to New York City today, as he teamed with award-winning chef Jean-Claude Garzia of Beau Rivage restaurant to showcase the Island to more than 50 top media and influencers at the prestigious James Beard House.

Chef Garzia and two members of his acclaimed culinary team, Mical Trott and Stephane Carpentier, prepared a menu of dishes that showcased Bermudian flavors, including his own take on Bermuda Fish Cakes, along with Free Range Chicken Piccata featuring a Bermuda Salsa, and Chilled Bermuda Loquat Soufflé.

According to Minister Furbert the event provided an outstanding opportunity to deliver a positive message about the destination while showcasing the island’s growing international culinary scene.

Minister Furbert said, “I was pleased to hear very strong feedback from the media, travel agents and meeting planners in attendance about Bermuda. They were all understandably impressed by the outstanding cuisine presented by Chef Garzia and came away with a very positive opinion of not only the island but the type of world-class culinary experiences they can expect to find here.”

Furbert shared with the gathered audience that this was his first event in North America in his new role while relating his mission to that of the Beard House’s namesake founder.

Minister Furbert continued, “As many of you know, James Beard was a tireless advocate for the culinary arts. It is therefore only fitting that this serves as my first official North American event in my new role as Minister of Business Development and Tourism, as it is my job to be a tireless advocate for the beautiful island of Bermuda.”

A cookbook author and teacher, James Beard was a champion of American cuisine who helped educate and mentor generations of professional chefs and food enthusiasts. Today, the Beard Foundation continues in the same spirit by offering a variety of events and programs designed to educate, inspire, entertain, and foster a deeper understanding of our culinary culture.

Chef Garzia and his team joined a prestigious roster of international chefs who have previously cooked in the famed Beard House kitchen and the media outlets in attendance included editors from such outlets as Travel + Leisure, Wall St. Journal, Town & Country, Reuters and Worth magazine, among others.

Earlier in the day, Minister Furbert took Bermuda’s message to the airwaves reaching thousands of listeners with an appearance on WCBS-FM’s popular “Dan Taylor Morning Show.”

Taylor has been a strong advocate for Bermuda, having broadcast previously from the Island.
