WEDNESDAY, DEC. 7: Norwegian Cruise Line has reaffirmed its loyalty to Bermuda for the next two summer seasons.

The cruise giant’s 2013 schedule was unveiled yesterday outlining 44 planned trips to the island by two ships.

The firm’s newest ship, the Norwegian Breakaway, which holds 4,000 passengers, will travel to Bermuda 22 times from New York in 2013 between May and October.

While the Norwegian Dawn will make a further 22 journeys to the island from Boston.

The announcement makes a welcome change from the recent spate of cruise companies that have reduced their service to the island

Carnival and Princess Cruises have significantly cut the number of trips their ships will make in 2012.

While Holland America recently announced that the Veendam would be pulling out of Bermuda in 2013.

Kevin Sheehan, Norwegian Cruise Line chief executive officer, told the Bermuda Sun: “Bermuda is a beautiful and desirable destination for cruisers.

“We are pleased to be continuing our commitment to the island with Norwegian Star and Norwegian Dawn making regular calls in 2012.

“In 2013, we will bring our newest and one of our largest ships, Norwegian Breakaway, sailing from New York to Bermuda.  Having Norwegian Breakaway call in Bermuda for her inaugural season is a definite coup for Bermuda.”

A company statement added: “The Norwegian Breakaway will sail a series of 22 seven-day cruises from New York beginning May 12, 2013.

“Departing on Sundays, the ship will spend three full days in Bermuda, along with three days at sea.

“The newly refurbished Norwegian Dawn will return to Boston, Massachusetts for the summer on May 3, 2013 and will sail a series of 22 seven-day Bermuda cruises departing every Friday.”

Norwegian Cruise Line has consistently been one of the biggest investors in Bermuda.

This year two ships; the Norwegian Dawn and the Norwegian Gem, have visited the island a total of 48 times.

And next year three ships; the Norwegian Dawn, Star and Gem will travel to Bermuda on 48 trips.
