Police carried out nearly 12,000 fewer stop and search arrests  in 2012 compared to the previous year.

The latest police statistics show a 68 per cent drop in the number of people pulled over by police in 2012.

There were 17,429 stop and searches 2011 compared to 5,555 in 2012.

Traffic enforcement activity also fell by close to a quarter year on year.

There were 31,529 offences logged last year compared to more than 40,700 in 2011 – a fall of 22.6 per cent.

The latest figure is the lowest figure recorded since 2008.

The total number of arrests for all offences has also slumped between 2011 and 2012, with just over 3162 people arrested last year compared to 4540 in 2011 – a drop of 1378 (20.9 per cent).

That is also the lowest number of arrests since 2008, when there was a total of 3255 people taken into custody.
