A reading festival aimed at encouraging parents to read to their children as well as giving kids the opportunity to pick up a free new book will be held this weekend at Victoria Park.

The festival ÷ put on by the Bermuda Alumnae Chapter of the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority ÷ is hoping to reach parents and children from newborns right up to the middle school level.

ãWe want to be able to share with the children who attend the Reading Festival the joys, excitement and adventure they can get from reading,ä said Jana Lambert, Scholarship chairperson.

ãSadly, many childrenâs homes do not have books, and so, in many cases books are not a part of a childâs home life. By giving a complimentary book to each child we hope to help start a collection, or add to an existing library.ä

Other activities at the Festival will include an art station for drawing, colouring and creative writing, face painting and a fun castle. The event runs from 10 to 3pm on Saturday June 1. It is free and open to the public, with drinks and popcorn provided.

The festival is sponsored by XL, the Bank of Bermuda Foundation, Centre Solutions and Fidelity.
