Luis Suarez has been banned for four months from all football-related activity by FIFA for his bite on Italy’s Giorgio Chiellini.

The Uruguay and Liverpool striker has also been banned for nine international matches and will miss the rest of the World Cup in Brazil. The Liverpool striker has also been fined £66,000.

The punishment means he will miss the first nine games of the Premier League season.

"Such behaviour cannot be tolerated on any football pitch and, in particular, not at a Fifa World Cup when the eyes of millions of people are on the stars on the field," Claudio Sulser, chairman of the Fifa disciplinary committee, said in a statement.

This is the third time Suarez has been banned for biting an opponent. He was banned for 10 games for biting Chelsea defender Branislav Ivanovic during a Premier League match in 2013 and was suspended for seven games for biting PSV Eindhoven midfielder Otman Bakkal in 2010.

The Uruguay FA have three days to appeal the decision.
