WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 26: It’s fitting that Brian Wellman will lead Bermuda’s Carifta Games for 2012.

Who better than a local sporting legend to take the coaching reins of what could be the largest squad ever to represent the island at the Games?

Wellman, a former world champion in the triple jump, has coached the national squad before — but nothing on this scale.

The Games will be held in Bermuda next spring, April 6-9.

Wellman has been too busy to ruminate over the honour of being head coach on home soil: “I’ve been knee deep in trying to organize everything,” he told us.

“I’ve been trying to get my athletes as prepared as possible to perform at Carifta and I’m also assisting other coaches in doing the same.”

Wellman has the luxury of drawing from a deep squad. “All the kids from last year’s Carifta are back so we’re building upon what we had. We had a bunch of kids from inter-school sports who we are introducing to the system so they will hopefully become a part of the team.
