MONDAY, MAY 7, 4:30PM UPDATE: Jesse and Zander Kirkland are off to a flying start in their bid to qualify for the Olympics at the Seiko 49er World Championships in Zadar, Croatia.

The pair won the second race in the Blue Fleet today on the opening day of qualifying. For good measure, they were also sixth in the first race out of 25 boats.

They finished the day strongly by taking fourth in the day’s final race.

They are first in the Blue Fleet on 11 points, and third overall, just one behind leaders Lukasz Prybytek and Pawel Kolodzinski from Poland.

This is the Kirkland brothers’ last chance to qualify for the London Olympics.

The qualifying is being done in three fleets of 25 boats.

The qualification series continues on Tuesday and Wednesday with 25 boats making the Gold Fleet sailing, which commences on Thursday. The top 10 boats from the Gold Fleet will advance to a medal race.
