Fighters take Olympic course
The day of training commenced on the Police Field grounds where fitness coaches Garry 'Buster' Wilkinson and Devrae Noel-Simmons put the athletes through rigorous fitness exercises which included shuttles, push-ups, shadow boxing, and fireman carries. The exercises were designed to simulate a three-round sanshou fight with the emphasis on stamina and strength. The hour workout did more than warm up the athletes for the long day of training seminars ahead of them.
BSA vice president Reuben Bean said: “It was encouraging to analyze the fighters in a state of extreme exhaustion and fatigue, while continuing to challenge themselves mentally and physically, eventually assuring them a rewarding sense of commitment and accomplishment at the end of the day.”
Boxing coach, Allan ‘Forty’ Rego was accompanied by former pro boxer Troy Darrell and performed numerous demonstrations before having each fighter pair up and work the new combinations that were taught.
Wilkinson’'s Northern Shaolin kung fu instructor sifu David Simons introduced the fighters to a number of shaolin kicking techniques and the last seminar of the day was taught by kyoshi Arnold Allan on throws and takedowns.[[In-content Ad]]
