Bad weather has meant crunch time for a British staple — Walkers Crisps.
Miles Market has already run out of the popular snack food — and has a sign up apologizing for their absence.
A spokeswoman for the upscale supermarket said bad weather had delayed a major shipment of the crisps, which come through New Jersey after an Atlantic crossing from the UK.
She said: “They were due in last Friday — but due to the weather, they won’t be able to get them off the docks until Wednesday.”
She added: “They are a big seller, anyway — and now everybody wants them because we don’t have any at the moment.”
The spokeswoman said that the crisps were popular, not just with expatriate workers from the UK, but with Bermudian shoppers and workers in offices in the Waterfront development in Hamilton, which also houses the supermarket.
She added: “We have a lot of nationalities all around us and a lot of people buy them for kids’ lunches as well.”
She added that one Waterfront-based company bought two large variety packs every Monday for snack-hungry staff at its offices.
The spokeswoman said: “Hopefully, Walkers will be back before the weekend.”
Supermart on the city’s Front Street confirmed they were suffering from a crisp drought as well.
A spokeswoman said: “Everyone buys them — they’re quite popular.
“We sell a good number of them — but no one has made any major complaints. We’ve been told they will be here soon.”
The snacks are imported by Pembroke-based Wallington Distributors.
The firm’s Sue Wallington explained that a shipment from the company, based in Leicester, England, had been delayed in the UK because of snow.
And — as the shipment links up with the Oleander, which sails out of New Jersey — bad weather on the US east coast had delayed the delivery further.
Ms Wallington said: “It should have got in last weekend, but it didn’t come down on the ship to Bermuda. They are on the docks now.”
She added: “There is a sign in most of the shops we supply. I’m totally empty at the moment.
“Normal service will be resumed as soon as possible. But everyone is totally out, so it might take a bit of time to get them out there. Hopefully, things will be back to normal by Thursday or Friday.”
