Wharf help on the way

The first shipment of heavy equipment for the Heritage Wharf project arrived on the Oleander this week.

A total of 15 trailers loaded with barge sections were brought into the island from New Jersey on Monday.

The multi-million dollar project is designed to modify and strengthen the Dockyard berth in time for the first arrival of the super-liner, Norwegian Breakaway later in May.

The work is expected to cost around $22 million and it will include the construction of mooring dolphins, berthing dolphins and the removal of a $4.1 million thruster wall.

Over the next few months machinery and equipment will continue to be brought in from the US to be used in the project.

Meanwhile out at sea this week a hand injury to a crewman on board the Mary Trader forced the bulk carrier to come into Bermuda yesterday morning so that the sailor could be treated.

While this afternoon the chemical tanker, Bow Riyad, is expected to sail into Five Fathom Hole in St David’s so another injured crewmember can be brought into Bermuda for treatment.

The Somers Isles is due into Hamilton today.

But the Bermuda Islander has been put behind schedule due to bad weather in the Atlantic on her return leg last week, and she is now expected to arrive in Bermuda on Saturday.
