Somers Kempe is scaling new heights and probing new depths in his job.

Mr Kempe is the Raymarine technician for Ocean Electronics a companion business to Ocean Sails in St George.

He recently had to climb 11 stories on board the Edda Fjord, an oil rig which had to pull into Bermuda because it’s GPS was putting out an intermittent signal.

Mr Kempe said: “I was able to resolve the issue fairly quickly as it was due to some faulty wiring.”

While the fix was simple, the problem for the ship was not as it had encountered a rough patch of weather and required a fully operational GPS to complete its trip.

Mr Kempe said he wasn’t afraid of heights but he did get a great view of being able to look through the windows of RCC Bermuda and was able to take some photos from his high-perched vantage point.

The technician’s expertise is also called upon in the opposite direction as he has installed Raymarine’s Dragonfly Sonar.

Mr Kempe said the tech allows anglers to view the world below their boat using dual channel CHIRP sonar technology which is an exclusive feature to Raymarine it allows anglers to explore bottom structure and target fish like never before.

Mr Kempe said: “We see this as an exciting and affordable new  product for the island.”
