MONDAY, JANUARY 21: Bermuda High School students will transform into the cast of My Fair Lady this week as they take on the classic story.

The school will present three showings of the musical on Thursday, Friday and Saturday.

My Fair Lady is the story of Henry Higgins, who takes a bet that he can transform the unrefined Cockney Eliza Doolittle into a lady and fool everyone into thinking she really is one.

The cast and crew of 60 students has been working for months to master an array of British dialects, including Eliza Doolittle's Cockney accent and Henry Higgins' mannered upper class English.

In a press statement, Jane Thorpe, director and secondary drama teacher, said: "One of the main challenges is to have our actors speak Cockney and formal British English in a believable and understandable way.

“Added is the difficulty of singing quite complex songs in a dialect which is not native to our actors.”

IB2 Student Katie Ewles will play Eliza Doolittle and IB1 Student Catriona Tate will star as Henry Higgins.

Year 10 Student Caroline Skinner will play Colonel Pickering.

The statement also said: “Students independently manage all lighting, sound and set changes involved in the production and all staging is unique and has been created at BHS by dedicated parent and student volunteers.

“In addition, a live orchestra made up of volunteers from the local musical community, will accompany the actors.”

A few tickets are still available by calling 295-6153 or emailing [email protected].

General admission is $20 for adults and $15 for students with preferred seating available for $25.

In addition, a Patron’s event will be held on the first night, which includes wine, canapés and preferred seating for $50.

Performances are Thursday and Friday at 7pm and Saturday at 5pm.
