TUESDAY, AUGUST 23: Students at Victor Scott Primary School will be able to get free school supplies at a back-to-school party this weekend.

The second annual event will be on Saturday at the school, hosted by Pembroke East Central MP Michael Weeks and his wife Cindy.

“My wife and I canvass the Pembroke East Central area on a regular basis, and in our walkabouts, and meeting with parents, grandparents and guardians, it became quite evident to us that there was a need,” Mr Weeks said.

“There were families in the area, that required assistance with equipping their children with the necessary tools to return to school.

“So, she and I sat down last year, and planned what we refer to as our ‘Back To School Fun Day’.

“This would be a time when the children in the area, could come together, enjoy their last weeks of vacation, with rides and games, enjoy free food, drinks and treats, while at the same time, each child in attendance, having the opportunity to receive free school supplies.”

Mr Weeks said last year they had planned for 250 children but when more than 300 turned up, they ran out of goody bags.

“This year our goal is to exceed 300 children in attendance”, he added.

Mr Weeks also has the support of the community with churches, the Pembroke Parish Council and various businesses including Lindo’s, Market Place, Brown and Co and other companies helping out.

Minister Weeks and his wife sponsor the school supplies and this year National Security Minister Wayne Perinchief is a part sponsor.

Asked why the event is important to him, the Minister said: “Well, quite simply, this is our way of giving back, in some small way to the community that I serve.

He continued: “When I became the MP for the Pembroke East Central area, I was serious when I said that I would bring about change where needed, ‘one street corner at a time’, and slowly but surely, we are accomplishing that.

“Events such as this brings the community together, provides an avenue for our children to recognize the importance of education and preparation, while at the same time assisting our parents.

“Many of us are struggling, and if we can do anything to lighten the load that they carry, then it is incumbent upon us to do that.”

In addition to the school supplies, there will be fun castles, train rides, free raffle draws, ice cream, snowballs and more.

The fun day will take place from 12 to 4pm.
