New community garden to open at Tivoli

By Bermuda National Trust press release- | Comments: 0 | Leave a comment

THURSDAY, OCT. 25: The Bermuda National Trust is delighted to announce the November opening of, a new Community Garden at its property Tivoli in Warwick.

Located off Middle Road and adjacent to Warwick Lanes Bowling Alley, the garden will provide 20 allotments for local Warwick residents and organisations to come together to cultivate food, socialise and exchange local horticultural knowledge.

The Bermuda National Trust would like to express its tremendous gratitude to the Ross "Blackie" Talbot Charity Classic for generously providing the funds to create the garden. In doing so, they have made possible a space that will help to benefit the local community's wellbeing, provide a fun learning resource as well as facilitate the development and strengthening of local social ties and networks.

Gardening and horticulture have long been a part of the island's history and, although in decline in more recent times, there is a renewed interest and demand for gardens and allotments as residents become more aware of Bermuda's global impact, as food prices continue to increase and as consciousness grows of the personal benefits of gardening and cultivating our own food.

Several classes and talks are planned in conjunction with the opening of the garden which will be designed to offer new gardeners an introduction to sustainable methods and impart experienced local gardeners' knowledge and techniques.

Allotments will be available from November 5th to Bermuda National Trust members. Don't worry if you are not a member, simply visit our website www.bnt.bm and follow the links to the online application/renewal form. Membership forms are also available at our offices located at Waterville, 2 Pomander Road in Paget.

To be considered for an allotment, application forms are available at our offices and on our website. Please complete a form and either drop it off, or email completed forms to [email protected] or fax them to 236 0617. All applications have to be received by Friday, November 2nd.

The rent for an allotment is $80 per year. Tenants will be selected via a lottery, with preference being given to Warwick residents.

For all other questions, please contact the Trust's Conservation Officer David Outerbridge at [email protected] or by calling 2366483 x 224.
