Insurer XL expects losses of up to $290 million from the Japanese earthquake and tsunami last month.

Preliminary estimates related to the disasters, pretax and net of reinsurance and reinstatement premiums, range from $190-290 million, with about 70 per cent attributable to XL’s reinsurance segment.

The range reflects the uncertainty about the event, including whether coverage levels will be reached under certain policies.
