Your chance to help Bermuda's hungry

FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 28: Businesses, organizations and individuals can do their bit to help Make Hunger History.

The Eliza Dolittle Society is hosting its second annual food donation event from Sunday, September 30 to Saturday, October 6, which includes a number of fundraising sport events.

The charity will distribute collection boxes around the island at participating locations and organizations, and encourages Bermuda to donate food to those in need.

Executive director Margaret Ward said: “We are excited to put this event on again. The charities we work with are in constant need of food. This event brings us all together and provides a huge amount of food for the upcoming months.”

Making Hunger History Week is one of Eliza Dolittle’s main events and their largest food drive of the year.

Businesses, schools and interested groups are invited to donate food collection boxes in locations where employees, students, visitors and/or the general public can place donated canned food and non-perishable food items. Food can also be taken to official drop-off locations throughout the island.

The charity will also host a number of events to raise funds and awareness. They hope to connect with the public and local businesses and raise awareness of the charity.

The first event is the Golf Social with a round of golf and BBQ to follow. Tickets are $100 per person and includes golf, cart fees, a BBQ lunch and a free drink while also donating to the charity. It takes place on Monday October 1 and participants can now register.

The society is also hosting a Zumbathon on Saturday, October 6 at the Bermuda High School gym. The two-hour event starts at 5pm with ZumbAtomic for children aged 12 and under and continues into Zumba from 5:30pm, which is taught by a variety of instructors. Tickets are $10 and the event is open to all ages and skill levels.

“We hope both events will help involve the public with our charity and gain awareness of Bermuda’s food needs,” said Ward.

“Besides raising much-needed funds, we hope they enable us to connect with locals and businesses that want to help with the year-long need for food.”

All donated food will be distributed to charities that provide meals and/or food supplies year-round to Bermuda’s hungry and needy. These charities include The Coalition for the Protection of Children, The Salvation Army, Centre Against Abuse, St. John’s Food Bank, Wesley Methodist Church’s Food Bank, The Seventh Day Adventist Food Bank and more.

The initiative gained overwhelming support from the community last year, with 103 companies and organizations participating and over 300 boxes of donated food collected. Conservative estimates put the running total at well over $50,000 of food. Food was distributed to over 10 charities and numerous families and seniors.
