Sherman Darrell of Devonshire pleaded not guilty to unlawfully clipping the ears of two Fila de Sao Miguel dogs between a date unknown and November 24.
He also denied causing unnecessary suffering, pain or injury to the dogs during the same time period.
Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner adjourned the matter to June 26 and gave Mr Darrell $1,000 bail.
Three additional men are expected to be charged with similar offences alongside Mr Darrell at that time.
