Exclusive: Beyonce dancer to teach Bermuda's youngsters
A talented young dancer who includes Beyoncé on his roll call of dance partners and appeared in the film Step Up 3D is coming to Bermuda to teach and inspire our youngsters.
Troika is bringing Jose Junior Tena to the island along with a host of professional choreographers to “foster self fulfillment and development” as part of its Groove workshops.
This is the second time that Troika has brought the workshops to the island — and this year they feature Bermuda’s own Eric Bean (contemporary) and Kioshi (hip hop) as well as Sean Bankhead (intermediate/advance hip hop) from Atlanta and Neeks Money (dancehall and island vibes) from Canada. The workshops at Berkeley Institute are this Saturday and cost $15 in advance (more on the door). The workshops will culminate in a “creative and explosive presentation highlighting the choreographic talents and passion for dance by Bermuda’s young people”.
The FYE (For You Entertainment) dance showcase takes place at the Earl Cameron Theatre at City Hall on Sunday, March 24.
Troika, which recently took over the operation of the hugely popular talent showcase Bermuda Glee, is also welcomes Tena from New York to teach as well as to guest perform during the showcase.
Jose ‘Boy Boi’ Tena, 18, is a recent graduate of the Performing Arts School in New York. He is a principal dancer of Dana Foglia Dance and has appeared in the feature film Step Up 3D. He then danced alongside Beyoncé in her campaign entitled Move You Body.
The Monsters of Hip Hop alum and 2012 Young Arts winner in World Dance currently teaches dance at the Broadway Centre of New York.
Troika’s Shoa Bean told the Bermuda Sun: “Through this initiative, young performers will be encouraged to strive for their own artistic excellence.
“This initiative will also support youth participation in all genres of dance. We have received submissions from a diverse group of young people in dance genres representative of hip hop, ballet, tap, modern, dancehall, inspirational and salsa. As one of our charitable pillars we have decided to offer Master class workshops with industry professionals in order to give Bermudians an opportunity to work with and be exposed to some of the industries top professionals.”
Money raised from the show will go towards supporting Troika’s 2013 programming.
