Maddie Moore stormed to her second gold medal at this year's Carifta Swimming Championships in Jamaica last night.
The Warwick Academy pupil won the girls’ 11-12 50m freestyle final at the National Stadium Pool in Kingston in a stunning time of 28:12, a new national age group record.
It was Moore's fourth medal after her gold in the 11-12 girls’ 50m backstroke, silver in the 100m backstroke and bronze in the 100m free.
Bermuda's other gold medallist from the Championships, Jesse Washington, won silver in the boys’ 13-14 50m freestyle final after a three-way tie for second.
It added to his bronze in the 100m butterfly and his gold in the 13-14 boys' 100m freestyle, achieved in a national record time of 54.71sec.
It meant that before today's final races, Bermuda’s medal count stood at seven.
On Washington's memorable gold swim in the 100m free, national coach Ben Smith said: “Jesse came to the pool with one purpose and that was a gold medal.
“He knew that the swimmers he was racing would go faster than they had in the morning so he would have to be ready. His start was not as fast as in the heats which left him behind in the first 12.5 metres but by 25 it was his race.
“He flipped first and the raced for home with the Bermuda contingent cheering him on with their air horns blaring.
“He broke 55 seconds on the same day that he broke 56 [in qualifying], with a commanding lead he hit the wall at 54.71 which lowered his brand new record.
“It was extra sweet with the new Minister of Sport Wayne Scott in the stands cheering along with the team. What a great night of racing. You could feel the energy on the team bus as we returned to the hotel.”
Monday night also saw Megan Lau, Ethan Daley, Vanessa Esposito and Alex McCallum all record PBs in the Individual Medley, while Emma Harvey, Lau, Daley, Esposito, Shannon Botelho and Dejan Wellman did the same in the 50m breaststroke.
Alex Pilgrim and Shannon Hassell set new markers in the 100m freestyle while Esposito equalled hers.
Sophie Froud also clocked a personal best in the 100 metres freestyle.
