A round up of Labour Day weekend events
FRIDAY, AUGUST 31: Labour Day was created to give workers the opportunity to campaign for better working pay and conditions but today it has become an extended holiday weekend packed full of fun events.
This year includes everything from a family festival and outdoor film screenings to a reggae concert and Carnival style celebration on Labour Day.
Here is a round up of some of the main events...
Friday:
• Movies in the Park at The Botanical Gardens.
8:30pm: Pirates
10:30pm: Think Like a Man
• Chewstick Neo Griot.
Award-winning poet Melodye Micere Van Putten will perform from 8pm at the Chewstick Headquarters from 8pm. (See p19).
Saturday:
• Movies in the Park at The Botanical Gardens.
8:30pm: Journey 2
10:30pm: Hunger Games
• The 17th annual Sand Sculpting Competition:
Then on Saturday, the 17th annual Sand Sculpture Competition takes place from 10am to 4pm on Horseshoe Bay. For those wanting to brush up their skills there will be sand sculpting clinics on Thursday, August 30 and Friday, August 31 one hour before sundown (6pm).
Sunday:
• City Family Festival: Postponed from last week due to bad weather the festival is aimed at children and their families. Activities include child and adult rides, fair stalls, go karts, free face painting and a dunk tank with Evolution fashion show models. There will be video games on plasma screens as well as a summer camp art displays and giveaways.
Takes place on Washington Street North and Dundonald Street from 1pm to 7pm. Free event.
• Summer Sundays — Island Vibes: This marks the last of the Summer Sundays series. The theme is soca, reggae and Latin and entertainment includes The Unit, Live Wires and the Yellow Brick Road, Jahstice, Raymond Clark, Dawns Fiery Limbo, Seabreeze Salsa, Robert Symonds Steel Pans, and Places Gombeys. The event will be hosted by ‘Power Girl’ Patrina O’Connor-Paynter.
Takes place at Victoria Park from 3pm to 8pm. Free event.
• Island Vibes After Party: Reggae singer Jahmali headlines this event and will be joined by Princess Black and the Conscious Reggae Movement. The event takes place in Victoria Park from 8pm to midnight. Tickets $15. Proceeds will go to three charities —The Chewstick Foundation, The Women’s Rescource Centre and Mirrors.
Monday:
• Labour Day: The weekend’s celebrations culminate with Monday’s carnival style Labour Day celebrations on Union Square from 11am. There will be Labour Day-inspired music, food stalls, and a host of other entertainment.
