'Biggest-ever block party' to be staged Wednesday

MONDAY, JULY 2: Fourth of July fireworks are promised for Wednesday’s special US Independence Day celebrations.

Front Street will turn into Main Street, USA, as the island celebrates the anniversary of its nearest neighbour’s nationhood.

Bermuda Chamber of Commerce executive director Joanne MacPhee said: “As a tribute to our American friends and neighbours, we have partnered with our vendors, retailers and restaurant members to throw what we hope will be Bermuda’s biggest-ever block party.”

Ms MacPhee added that Front Street stores will be decked out in red, white and blue, while restaurants and bars will feature US-themed food and drinks at special prices.

Ms MacPhee said that — for the first time — an international sponsor, RIM, the firm behind BlackBerry, has been lined up. The Canadian global telecoms firm will use the event, in partnership with Bermuda’s Digicel, to launch its new smartphone.

Among the entertainment on offer will be the popular Pickled Onion house band Grafitti Park, who will perform a selection of American rock’n’roll classics.

Bermuda’s Toni Robinson will pay her own musical tribute to the music of America, followed by a hair and beauty showcase.

The Argo Foundation is also sponsoring Bermuda Glee — a specially-choreographed performance of “Seasons of Love” from the Broadway hit musical “Rent”, featuring more than 50 local schoolchildren.

The Bermuda Sun’s own Don Burgess will take part in Pump It Up — a Bermuda Hospitals Board fundraiser — wearing a fetching pair of gold stilettos.

The night will also feature a hot dog eating competition, before the grand finale laser show and fireworks display, accompanied by music.

The Department of Marine and Ports, Ministry of Transport, would like to advise the public that, due to the fireworks display to be held on Wednesday, July 4 at 10pm in Hamilton, the 10pm ferry (Bermudian) to Dockyard will be held for approximately 10 minutes after the fireworks show has finished.
