Christmas gifts with a twist?

FRIDAY, DEC. 7: A new jewellery line by emerging Bermudian designer Rebecca Little has a unique twist. Her intricate designs take their inspiration from textures so solid metals appear to flow.

Little, who has won several bursaries including two from the prestigious Goldsmith’s Company in London, recently returned to the island after several years studying jewellery design in the UK.

Her work is currently on display at Swiss Timing on Front Street and also in the Bermuda Society of Arts Artmegeddon Exhibition.

“The inspiration is fabrics, the most obvious way to get that effect is to directly copy it,” Little told the Bermuda Sun. “I delved a bit deeper and came up with a technique that creates a fluid feeling in the metal.” 

Working from her home studio, Little uses mainly gold plated metal and sterling silver which are complimented by precious and semi precious stones.

She tends to make the more traditional jewellery pieces such as necklaces, earrings, bracelets, rings and cufflinks and is also able to make customised pieces to order.

For her Twill Collection she uses pliers to painstakingly twist the metals into their various shapes. Twill is a textile stitching technique which can be made out in the band of the ring picture on the right. “I’ve got it off to an art now,” she said.

Little holds a degree from UCCA Farnham in 3D Jewellery and Metalwork among other design qualifications and has had her work displayed twice at the London Goldsmith’s Fair. Her work has been included in numerous exhibitions including the Collect show at the Victoria and Albert Museum, London.

She hopes to show her work at Masterworks in the near future and is working on ideas for a Bermuda-inspired collection. To see more of her pieces visit www.rebeccalittlejewellery.com
