Clothing Mart in tune with economic times
FRIDAY, JAN. 20: Warwick Academy will be holding its annual clothing sale to raise funds for the school’s 350th anniversary.
The Clothing Mart is the longest running recycling project in Bermuda and will begin on February 15.
It began in 1956 when Lady Sharpe and Pam Kempe, along with their friends, launched this bargain-hunters paradise.
Organisers said the event is even more relevant now in this difficult economic era and also in the quest to recycle.
Coordinator Lynne Fisher, said: “Once a year you have a chance to clear out your closets, and make a little extra cash, at this hugely popular consignment sale.
“We accept clean clothing in excellent condition.
“I always say, ‘Bring them in just as you would like to buy them’.”
In addition to clothing, organisers are also accepting small appliances in good working order, kitchen equipment, toys, games, linens, china, silver, and paintings can also be consigned while books, tapes, DVD’s, belts, socks and shoes can be donated.
Mrs Fisher said the event is even more important this year in the recession.
“Well, I think it’s very important because so many people are hurting.
“They’re out of jobs or they’re trying to pay mortgages or bills and they don’t have the money.
“It’s been operating for 50 odd years. It’s gotten bigger and bigger and bigger.”
Recession
She continued: “I think in this recessional period, it will be more important then ever because it’s a community outreach.
“It’s not a donation sale, it’s a consignment sale where people put in things that they want to get rid of.”
Sixty per cent of the sale will go to the consigner while 40 per cent will go to Warwick Academy.
Mrs Fisher said the sale begins on Wednesday, February 15 from 11am to 6pm and will run for the rest of that week but times will be noon to 5 pm for the remaining days.
On Saturday, February 18, there will be the half-price sale, then Sunday, February 19 from 3 to 5pm will see the hugely popular ‘$3 a bag’ sale.
Volunteers are always required and welcomed for the consignment receiving days on February 11 and 12.
