Cruise visitors down in spring but air arrivals up
WEDNESDAY, JULY 20: Tourist numbers dropped by 3.5 per cent in the second quarter of 2011, Government announced today.
Tourism Minister Patrice Minors told a press conference 243,858 people visited the island between April and June. The figures are down by almost 10,000 compared with 2010.
She said the drop was primarily due to “a decline in cruise and yacht arrivals”.
But air arrivals rose by four per cent in the second quarter, with more than 80,000 visitors flying to Bermuda.
Ms Minors added: “Bermuda continues to experience modest and encouraging gains in arrivals for the year.
“The first two quarters of the year represent the first occasion of two quarters of consecutive growth since the January to June period of 2005.
“This clearly represents an uptrend, or seeds for optimism for turning the corner, but there is still a long way to go.”
Cruise visitation declined in the second quarter by six per cent while yacht arrivals dropped by 40 per cent.
The nine largest Bermuda Hotel Association member hotels reported a three per cent increase in room occupancy.
