Culture Fest provides family fun

SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 30: Culture Fest opened yesterday with music, food, dance and of course, oodles of culture.

The two-day event is being held in Dockyard again today and is filled with fun for the whole family.

There is a kid’s section complete with fun castles, games and many toys to buy.

If you are looking for food, there is no shortage including fried fish, meat on sticks, Portuguese specialties, cookies, lemonade and chips on a stick.

But of course there must be culture.

Organiser Eugene Dean has two stages set up, one near the Clock Tower at the main entrance and the second in the Victualling Yard.

At the Victualling stage, there are also vendors selling African, Indian and many other ethnic items.

Despite the weather, locals came out to support the event.

Mr Dean is hoping for larger crowds today and expects a good amount of tourists, as a cruise ship will be in a port.

Speaking to us yesterday, he said: “Today it started off a bit slow because of the rain. That was expected.

“We were thankful that since then, the weather’s been clear.

“We are very pleased with how the opening went with the Premier, the Governor and the Opposition Leader in attendance.

“We had all types of people in traditional dress and the flags.

“We were encouraging people to do it but we weren’t sure they would.”

Mr Dean said he’s also been happy with the performances.

“Everyone has been commenting positively about the event.

People are seeing different entertainment that they didn’t know existed.

“We have some international acts and local acts.”

Today, entertainment begins at 12pm to 4:30pm with world music opening up the line-up again.

From 1pm on the World Stage entertainment includes the Bermuda Regiment band, the Scottish Pipe Band and Portuguese Folklore Band and dancers.

The from 4pm music includes the Conscious Reggae Movement, Woody Noble, Princess Black, Flookie, the Filipino Singers and Dancers and the Kennel Boys.

On the Unity Stage from 12:30pm will be Stevie Dread, Corvin Melody and Sonique Sanctuary and from 4:30pm there will be the Menuhin String Quartet, James Martinez and another performance by TJ Gibson.
