Economic debate slated for October

WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 28: The Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry will host a public forum on the economy next month.

Minister Kim Wilson announced today that her ministry has partnered with the Association of Bermuda International Business Companies, Bermuda Employers Council and the Bermuda Hotel Association to host the forum.

It is entitled ‘The Great Debate: You and the Economy’ and is intended to engage the general public in a holistic discussion about the economy as it relates to the value of foreign revenue, where it comes from, how it circulates through the economy and the steps that Bermuda must take to retain and grow its earnings.

The event will take place at the Fairmont Hamilton Princess on Thursday, October 6 at 5:30pm

Richard Winchell, executive director of the Association of Bermuda International Business Companies said: “By getting the public involved we hope they will support our collective efforts as we work together to put in place the kind of reform that would make Bermuda more attractive to foreign investors in an effort to create new jobs and grow the economy.”

A panel of local business and union leaders will make brief presentations before opening the forum to the public for questions and comments.

After the general session, Ms Wilson will host two breakout sessions, one exclusively for unemployed carpenters and tradesmen and the other for unemployed international business professionals.

She said: “My goal is to use these sessions to hear the concerns that unemployed persons in these two key areas are having with respect to their job search efforts. 

“Several recruitment agencies have also agreed to be on hand to assist with the displaced international business personnel.

“Meanwhile, Bermuda’s carpenters are experiencing some unique challenges and I am keen to meet one-on-one with this group.”

Keith Jensen, president of the Bermuda Employers Council said: “Government is supporting strategies to attract new business and we need to work together to create new jobs. It is important that all sectors of the community attend this important event.”
