By Don Burgess
Malachi Jones decision to play for his club rather than his country will end costing his club.
Jones was banned for two games in domestic league play for disobeying coach David Moore.
He will also be ineligible to represent Bermuda in its next international series.
Willow Cuts, Jones’ club, was also issued a “severe reprimand for their lack of leadership” the Bermuda Cricket Board said in a press release. Jones was part of Bermuda’s team for the Americas Tournament being played here. He went to a morning training session on an off day, and then played for Willow Cuts in a crucial match against Bailey’s Bay later the same day.
The players on the squad were told they couldn’t play for their club with the exception of Stephen Raynor. The clubs were also sent an e-mail warning them national team players were not allowed to play for their clubs during the tournament.
At the time, coach Moore said: "I am extremely disappointed and surprised that one player would not only let the team down but Bermuda as well. The purpose of the rest day is recover and regenerate from injuries to be able to continue in the tournament at optimum level." n
