SUN, OCT. 21: More than 700 people turned out on Saturday for a major arts event in St George’s.

And organisers said the second annual Art Walk in the East was a smash hit with the crowds who thronged the streets of the old town.

Ami Zanders, who helped organise the event, said: “It was just packed – it was bigger and better than last year and next year will be even bigger.”

She added: “More artists were involved this year and more people came out to support us.”

She added: “Events like this are very important – we don’t have any funding, that’s the problem. People go abroad to study and come back and there’s nothing here for them.

“Even though we have three or four art galleries, that’s not enough to facilitate the amount of people and talent we have in the arts.

“Events like this give people more of an outlet to showcase their creativity and it’s good for the town too.

“St George’s isn’t doing so well and the arts community is struggling as well. It’s helping each other out and it’s been very successful.”

Art work – which included paintings, pottery and cedar carvings – was on display across the town, and the event included performance artists as well, including drag artist Mark Anderson and his alter ego Sybil Barrington, the Queen of Bermuda.

Ms Zanders said: “He was definitely one of the hits of the evening. Everybody was smiling and enjoying themselves.”

In addition, local restaurants got into the spirit of the event by displaying works by Bermuda artists, while St George’s shops hosted artists as well.
