Naude, Thomson win National Duathlon titles

Riaan Naude and Dee Thomson had enough left in the tank following their exploits in Texas to claim the national duathlon titles at Clearwater this weekend.

Naude pipped Garth Thomson, who also competed in the Lone Star Half Ironman, overtaking him on the last lap of the run to take victory.

"I was almost cramping on the run," said Naude, who admitted the Texas race had taken it out of him.

"But the training paid off and I was able to last," said the South African of his victory in the 5krun/30k bike/5k run on Sunday.

"Garth had come flying past me on the downhill on the bike. He was doing about 60km an hour and I had to go as hard as I could to minimize the loss on the bike and have enough in the tank to catch him on the last run.

"I wanted to save some energy for the run but he is a machine on the bike so I had to give it my all.

"I managed to catch him around midway through the run and hold on to win," said Naude, of his victory on the scenic route through Cooper's Island nature reserve.[[In-content Ad]]
