Role of guest workers saluted at ceremony
FRIDAY, DEC. 17: The role of our guest workers was recognised at an International Migrants Day ceremony.
The ceremony was held at City Hall today, though only a handful of migrant workers were in attendance.
Opening the ceremony, Senator Kim Wilson thanked migrant workers for their contribution to Bermuda.
“Our island can’t operate without your presence,” she said. “Migrant workers play an important and vital role in our workforce.
Sen. Wilson added: “The role of the Department of Labour and Training is to promote good industrial relations. “
She said migrant workers have the same rights in the workplace as Bermudians and if they are treated unfairly, they can file an official complaint.
She continued: “The Government of Bermuda extends our sincere thanks and gratitude for your contributions to our economy and workplace.”
Sen. Wilson also reminded the public that according to the Employment Act, employees are entitled to two weeks’ paid vacation, eight sick days and paid maternity leave.
The Bermuda Industrial Union (BIU) led today’s rally.
Migrant workers have the right to join unions here.
