Romeo and Juliet to be performed at Fort Hamilton
WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 15: The Bermuda Civic Ballet will celebrate its 40-year anniversary with a special production of Romeo and Juliet next week.
The show will feature dancers from the Croatia National Ballet as well as local dancers.
It is being held under the patronage of Sir John Swan and will take place starting Wednesday night at Fort Hamilton.
He was the chairman for 25 years.
At a luncheon held at the Fairmont Hamilton Princess today, chairman Jerome Dill, Sir John, founder Patricia Dean-Gray and choreographer Svebor Secak all spoke about the show.
Mr Dill said: “When people have spoken to me and they have determined that his is going to be our 40th anniversary, they say that’s amazing.
“They think it’s been around for much longer that that.”
He continued: “The Civic Ballet focuses on Bermudian led productions for Bermuda.
“We pride ourselves on being one of the only dance productions in Bermuda that does that.
“Our upcoming production is going to be going on later this month.
“Our dancers are putting together something that’s going to be special for our 40th anniversary.”
Sir John thanked the dancers for agreeing to fly to Bermuda to be apart of the show.
“When I look at the people who have come from abroad but more importantly, when I look at the opportunity this affords some 50 odd Bermudians to participate, this Romeo and Juliet is a great, romance, a Shakeperean production.
It’s a passion in our hearts that will be felt the evening of the production.
“I think that Bermuda is fortunate to have people who are prepared to make a sacrifice.”
He continued: “I couldn’t think of a better setting than Fort Hamilton.
“It’s an opportunity from Wednesday night until Saturday night to experience something that you have to go to London or New York or other major cities to see.
“You’re going to experience it on a small island.”
Mrs Dean-Gray also thanked the international dancers for contributing to the show.
“The people that we need to thank for those who started and stayed by us for all these years.
“That’s the community.
“Without the community support, we can’t exist.
“It’s as simple as that.”
