Brits Ian Williams and Sir Ben Ainsle both finished 8-1 in Group 2 in the Argo Gold Cup and advanced to the quarter-final round.
Italian Francesco Bruni topped Group 1 and appears to be the best bet to stop the UK sailors from finishing 1-2.
Williams will face US Virgin Islands’ native Taylor Canfield in his quarter-final match while Sir Ben will take on Sweden’s Bjorn Hansen.
Defending
Canfield is the defending champion, but Williams has been the best sailor this season and leads the points standings with 82 points.
Sir Ben won the race in 2009 and 2010.
Bruni faces Phil Robertson while Adam Minoprio battles fellow Kiwi Keith Swinton.
Friday’s weather forecast is for southwesterly winds of eight to 12 knots.
