Champions Devonshire Cougars eked out a 1-0 win over a combative Flanagans Onions side at BAA on Saturday night.
Dennis Smith’s team, who won the triple last season, produced a laboured performance in the league-opener.
They took the lead side through Domico Coddington 10 minutes after the break and, despite never looking comfortable, held on for three points.
Flanagans will consider themselves unfortunate not to have at least got their season under way with a draw, especially after Alex Hunter hit the crossbar.
Elsewhere in the Premier Division, last season’s runners-up PHC came unstuck at Wolves 3-1, while Dandy Town and North Village fought out a 2-2 draw. Newly-promoted Hamilton Parish made a statement with a 5-1 thumping of Somerset Trojans.
In the First Division, Devonshire Colts saw off BAA 5-2 in an entertaining game, while Ireland Rangers increased hopes of a improved season after a 1-0 win over YMSC.
