But many of us feel a little guilty after Easter subsides because we have been chomping away on codfish cakes with hot cross buns and plenty of chocolate eggs! Although they taste delicious, we can’t help but feel they’ve had a detrimental effect on our body and in particular, our weight. This leads us into wanting to diet before beach season arrives. I get asked all the time about which diet is the best approach to getting lean. The answer I provide is always the same.
There is no specific approach! People are as different on the inside as they are on the outside. We all look and act differently, yet we seem to take it for granted that we are biologically identical on the inside but we’re not. Our organs are different shapes and sizes and although they all function the same, they are all biochemically unique. This is why so many diets that use a cookie-cutter approach simply do not work. A certain diet may work for one person but yet make another person sick. In order to be lean we need to get healthy first. Being lean is purely a byproduct of being healthy. From a genetic standpoint, as humans we should all be pretty lean.
Being overweight is a result of a malnourished body. Overweight people often eat a lot of food but it is typically devoid of any good nutrients. If you go outside and take a good look at nature, you will never see a fat bird, fish or tree frog, and they haven’t read one single diet book! They simply eat for their natural needs. We are all metabolically different. To generalize, we have three different metabolic types – Protein, Mixed and Carb types. ‘Protein’ types are for people that have genetic origins from places in the world where the ground freezes in the winter, so they would’ve had to survive on animal foods.
People that have genetic origins from geographical locations near the equator are usually ‘Carb’ types, as they have access to fruit and vegetables, but game meat is not readily available. ‘Mixed’ types are those people that have genetic origins from somewhere in between. Each metabolic type differs in how fast we oxidize our food. Your body will convert food into energy at an optimal rate, so it will not need to create fat stores if you are eating right for your metabolic type.
